Alternative Assessment for Third Trimester (2010):
Pick out the floor plan of the house you would like to decorate. I have a book you may look in and copies of possible floor plans to look through.
Find the areas of the ceiling, floor and walls of each room. Use this form to help you organize your thoughts.
Find prices for paint/primer or wallpaper, carpet and padding, and tile or wood laminate flooring. Make certain to write down the manufacturer (brand name), color or pattern name, and the dimensions. A print out from the computer is the easiest way to get all of this information though finding prices in the advertising section of the newspaper is also a good way to look up this information. Here is a note to help you remember what you need to find.
Calculate how many gallons (or liters, etc.) of paint and primer you need to cover your walls. For example, if your price is in 2-gallon cans, you will need to purchase the paint in multiples of 2 gallons. Many paints cover 350 square feet per gallon.
Calculate how many boxes of tiles or wood flooring you will need to cover your kitchen and bathrooms. Remember that you cannot purchase one square foot of flooring, only a box, even if they give you a price per square foot. For example, if it costs $100 for 1 box that covers 20 square feet, and you have a 102 square foot room, you will need to purchase 6 boxes, not five (5 x 20 = 100, 6 x 20 = 120).
Calculate how many square yards of carpet you will need to cover the floors of the remainder of your rooms. Remember that one square foot equals nine square yards. You cannot purchase carpet by the square foot, only the square yard.
Make an invoice and show me your final costs for decorating the house. If you use Microsoft Word, you will be able to choose a template instead of opening a new blank document. There are invoice templates from which you can pick. Here is one you can download.
The project is due the last week of school, on the Monday before exams begin. Your invoice will be the final product, but don't forget to include all of your work so that I can follow along with your numbers. Here is a form you can download that lists all the pieces of information that you will need to include in your project.
